Email Marketing That Drives Revenue

(Not Just Sends) There’s a version of email marketing that looks busy.  And there’s a version that drives revenue. We’ve seen both. Most ecommerce brands we speak to are sending emails. They have campaigns going out. They have a template. They might even have a nice design. But when we look at the numbers, email is often underperforming its potential by a wide margin. Not because the channel doesn’t work. But because it isn’t being used to its full capability.

Why is Email So Important in Ecommerce

Email is the only channel you truly own.
  • You don’t rent it from Google
  • You don’t fight an algorithm
  • You don’t pay for every impression
But more importantly, your business is sitting on intent signals. The question isn’t whether they exist. It’s whether you’re capturing the information and acting on it appropriately.  A strong ecommerce email setup doesn’t rely on one weekly campaign. It builds around key commercial behaviours, moments where customer intent is high and revenue is recoverable. That typically includes actions such as:
  • Adding products to basket
  • Starting (but not completing) checkout
  • Repeated product views
  • Early repeat purchases
  • Purchase gaps or drop-off patterns
  • High-value buying behaviour
We don’t need to list every flow. What matters is this: Each behaviour tells a story. And each story represents a different commercial opportunity. AND each one deserves a different response. This is where most brands miss the opportunity.

Not All Customer Actions Mean the Same Thing

This is where email either becomes powerful, or generic. Different behaviours signal different levels of commercial intent. But we see many brands treat them the same. Someone browsing casually is handled like someone who almost completed payment. A high-frequency buyer receives the same promotion as a first-time purchaser. That’s not strategy. That’s volume. Strong ecommerce email marketing interprets behaviour correctly. For example: When checkout is abandoned, the objective isn’t awareness,  it’s recovery. It’s in understanding what the action actually means, commercially.

What Most Brands Get Wrong

From what we see, a few patterns show up repeatedly:

1. Campaign Heavy. Flow Light.

Brands focus on weekly promotions but ignore the automated journeys that quietly drive 30–50% of email revenue when set up correctly

2. Design Over Commercial Logic

Beautiful templates. Weak offers. No urgency. No hierarchy. Email is not a brochure - it’s a conversion tool.

3. No Testing Framework

  • Subject lines guessed
  • Send times assumed
  • Offers rotated randomly
Without structured A/B testing, performance plateaus - and no one knows why.

Testing Over Templates

Templates don’t drive revenue. Testing does. The subject line alone can change open rate by 20–40%. And open rate affects everything downstream. But the goal isn’t just about who opens your email. It’s incremental revenue. We test for:
  • Revenue per recipient
  • Conversion rate
  • Order value lift
  • Repeat purchase rate
Because vanity metrics don’t pay invoices! Look out for our next blog on the results of our A/B testing email subject lines.

Email Is a Margin Lever

Paid media costs are rising. CPCs are volatile. Retention is where profitability lives. When email is structured properly:
  • It reduces dependency on paid acquisition
  • It increases customer lifetime value
  • It protects margin
  • It compounds over time
That’s why we treat email as a performance channel - not a creative channel. Design matters. But revenue matters more. If your email channel feels active but not impactful, it’s worth asking: “Is it built around behaviour - or around a calendar?”  What’s your next move? Za Za Homes match big name stores with cross channel success

Introducing Za Za Homes

Za Za Homes is an independent family-run business based in Devon offering everything you could ever need to style your home and garden. Most of their products are designed inhouse and crafted by skilled artisans, meaning they’re often unique, one-of-a-kind pieces.

FUN FACT

Za Za Homes has a lovely meaning behind the name. The MD Zara’s nickname when she was little was ‘Za Za’.

The story so far

Za Za Homes is one of our longest standing customers, first teaming up with CSP Commerce back in 2016. Over the last 8 years, we have helped them to scale up their business with initial just Google Ads before branching out to other services like email marketing. The challenges:
  • They found that after leaving the EU costs were rising, especially when it came to shipping container prices. As a business that cares about sustainability, it was important to continue using imported materials like bamboo and mango wood.
  • As a small team, they didn’t have much time to focus on the marketing. They needed to prioritise other tasks like new products, running the warehouse and stock management.

Help! I need somebody, not just anybody!

What did we do to achieve Google Ads success?

  • Created campaigns based on bestsellers like chairs, stools and wedding lighting - allocating more budget to these as they’re more likely to convert.
  • Utilised different campaign types to get the most value. Interestingly, Performance Max is the highest performer and generates 88% of the total sales!
  • Set up Google Ads Demand Gen campaigns, including creating engaging image assets.
  • Used product data, seasonality and current trends to support campaign direction.

After working with Za Za Homes on their Google Ads account, we saw an opportunity to help with their email marketing and increase revenue through this channel.

The email marketing team has:
  • Created a content strategy covering product launches, promotions and seasonality.
  • Redesigned the emails to make them look more appealing & better reflect the brand.
  • Set up flows which target the right customers, at the right time. This has included welcome series, abandoned cart, browse abandon and winback - just to name a few!
  • Used A/B testing to analyse performance of subject lines and content, as well as to find the optimal sending time.

📈 Overall revenue on the website has increased by 94.08% (last 12 months vs previous 12 months). 🎯 Google Ads are seeing the most successful year in terms of revenue, with a 100% increase YoY. 💷 Despite YoY competition increasing from retailers such as Dunelm, Wayfair, Amazon and Etsy which has raised the average cpc by 20% YoY, we have still managed to maintain good ROAS - with one campaign getting 1,455%. 🎉 As CSP Commerce is a Klaviyo partner, we decided to move this customer onto the platform from Mailchimp. It offers much better control over segmentation, data and automations, and has helped us to increase attributed revenue by 1,362.2% on average per month. ⚙️ Automations are generating 876.32% more revenue since CSP Commerce took over!

Online Pound Store get more for their money with ROI success

Who are they?

Delivering household essentials straight to your door. Online Pound Store is an award-winning Manchester-based ecommerce store that has been operating since 2014. The wholesaler delivers household essentials such as food, drink, toiletries and cleaning products around the UK. With 4.5M website visitors, 100,000 active members and demand increasing, they realised it was time to scale even more with paid marketing. That’s where we came in!

We love a challenge

Online Pound Store grew considerably during the pandemic as many people turned to shopping online while physical stores were closed. Operating throughout lockdown helped to raise awareness of the brand to new customers and drive sales. When the pandemic ended and shops started to reopen, Online Pound Store wanted to find ways to keep customers engaged and prevent them from going back to old ways of shopping instore. Their main aim has always been to continue growing their online presence, encourage more users to sign up on the website and most importantly, increase revenue and sales. Another goal was to perform well against large scale competitors like Poundland and Temu. Because they have bigger budgets and more flexibility with reducing prices, visibility was a key challenge for the project.

What we did

At CSP Commerce, we have a particular set of skills… If there are missed opportunities, we will find them and we will use them!

The Google team started by reviewing and restructuring the Ads account and:

  • Identified the highest performers
  • allocated budgets more effectively
  • pushed products that were more likely to convert.

We came up with a ROAS strategy which included:

  • Tailoring bidding strategies to meet their goals.
  • Adjusting targets based on high performing products/those with more profit margins.
  • Experimenting with different ad placements.
  • Testing different ad copy to see which converted the most.

We made sure they had good visibility by:

  • Investing more in competitively priced products.
  • Using a flexible approach to structure the account over time, based on the data.
  • Putting more focus on Shopping rather than Search where it was far more competitive.

The Results

The proof is in the pudding. Since teaming up with Online Pound Store 4 years ago, we have: Performed at or above ROAS targets - it hasn’t dropped below 900% since 2023! Online Pound Store has improved search impression share (+77%) YoY despite competing against bigger and/or new competitors like Poundland and Temu.

Feedback from the Client

“Working with CSP Commerce has been amazing! We’ve seen sales coming through and high ROI without overspending. They really care about getting the best results for us and we're happy to have them on our side!”
Genuine Style ecommerce case study increased revenue

Increasing Genuine Style’s Product Revenue by 1,785%

Genuine Style is an ambitious company that sells designer sunglasses and is seeking to scale quickly. Prior to approaching CSP Commerce, without an internal marketing team, the company faced a major challenge in building trust with the consumer and establishing credibility. Our ecommerce marketing agency was brought on board to help rectify these issues.

Our Approach

We approached the problem by introducing our Amazon and eBay teams to work closely with their internal people to sell across all EU markets. We focused on reviews and social proofing, as well as improving messaging and brand positioning. Within one year, we expanded our services to include Google Ads, Paid Social and Email.

The Results

The results have been nothing short of remarkable. In just 12 months, our efforts have led to a conversion rate increase from 0.25% to 1.10%, a 1785% increase in product revenue, and a 301% increase in brand impressions on campaigns.

Feedback from the client

Commenting on the partnership of the two businesses Richard Harrison, Managing Director, said: “We've been working with CSP since 2020. This started with the management of our Google, Amazon (U.K and Europe) and eBay paid advertising and quickly progressed to also include all of our social media and email marketing campaigns. Connor and Zoe work hard on developing new content ideas and their presentation to develop our brand image and to maximise our RoI through Facebook and Klaviyo. We have seen some great results and are looking forward to seeing what the CSP team can deliver for us in 2023.” This case study demonstrates the power of collaborative work, shared success, and winning together. By working closely with our clients, we can help fast-growing ecommerce businesses achieve rapid growth and deliver real value for their marketing spend. In the case of Genuine Style, our combined efforts have led to a substantial increase in conversions, revenue and brand recognition, setting the company on a path to long-term success.
